Homepage redesign for a major local authority in UK

Project Scope

The homepage needed more than just a visual refresh, it required a rethink of structure, accessibility and user flow. As a public-facing platform serving a wide, diverse audience, the existing design was making it harder than it needed to be for people to access essential services. My job was to design a cleaner, more intuitive homepage that supported real-life tasks while staying aligned with the council’s digital identity and governance requirements.

Objectives

The core focus of this redesign was to simplify the homepage layout and structure, making it easier for users to quickly access key services. Improving accessibility across all devices was essential, as was ensuring that every aspect of the design complied with WCAG guidelines. It was also important that the updated visuals fit within the council’s existing brand framework, creating consistency across platforms while supporting a more modern, user-friendly experience.

Solutions delivered

I created a new homepage layout that brought clarity to content structure and helped users navigate more easily. Alongside this, I developed a flexible, component-based design system tailored specifically to the homepage designed to support both future scalability and design consistency across the site. My design decisions were guided by UX research and user behaviour insights, with a strong focus on optimising the placement of key content and calls to action. The final delivery included a developer-ready UI kit, making it easy for the council’s in-house development team to implement the new design within their existing content management system.

Impact

The redesigned homepage and component system were handed over to the in-house development team and are now being rolled out in stages. The new design has already started shaping a more user-friendly and accessible experience for residents and supports long-term improvements across the council’s wider digital ecosystem.
